Polycarbonates plant, LEXAN II, Murcia, Spain.

The plant built by General Electric Plastics puts this company among the 5 biggest in the world. The plant produces Lexan® polycarbonate in Cartagena (Murcia), with a capacity of 300,000 tonnes of polycarbonate (PC).

The plant was awarded to the joint SR-TR-FW, where SENER was responsible for BisPhesol A (BPA), offsites, interconnecting and final process of the product.

The works carried out at the LX PC plant include the following developments: the Bis-Phenol A (BPA) unit, reactors, storage of materials and finished products, unloading installations, main rack, substations (including the modification of the existing one of 132 kV), generation of thermal oil, non-process buildings, buried piping, modification of the fire-fighting pond, roadways and drains and temporary installations, including entrances to the new plant.

In addition to the aforementioned works, it carries out other basic and detail engineering work, purchases management and field warehousing, and supervises the mechanical assembly for the facility of two new R-65210 C/D reactors (in addition to the existing R-65210 A/B) in the BPA unit. Moreover, it carries out the basic engineering for the modification of the gas/liquid separation system of rotating vacuum filters installed in the plant.

SENER, along with Técnicas Reunidas Foster Wheeler, participates in the engineering, purchases and building supervision for all the facilities.

As a result of the excellent job done, the same consortium (TR-FW-SENER) is assigned the realisation of LEXAN II, a plant with double the plant’s original capacity.
