Logroño train station

On 26 June 2004 ADIF published a public competition for contracting consultancy and technical assistance for the development of the Integration of Rail in the City of Logroño construction project. The joint venture “INTEGRACIÓN FERROCARRIL LOGROÑO, INECO-SENER UNIÓN TEMPORAL DE EMPRESAS” won this competition.
In parallel, LIF 2002 published an International competition for the development of the urban master-planning project which was won by Iñaki Ábalos and Juan Herreros (Ábalos & Herreros), and which included design of the new train station.

The new station was developed in accordance with the design included in the master plan and in close collaboration with Ábalos & Herreros, constituting a fragment of a larger urban project. The station is composed of a subterranean platform hall and an entrance hall building at surface level. These were integrated in an ensemble of buildings that includes the future bus station located on the opposite side of Colón Avenue, via a trafficked roof that connects them. Along with the roof over the platform hall, this forms an ample public space.
In the platforms hall, a series of rooflights ensures natural light and generates areas of considerable height in which a strong relationship with the exterior is established.
In the exterior, the rooflights are integrated in the park design and at night are illuminated (via street lighting circuits) acting in the park as giant lamps.
