SENER has developed its floating storage and regasification units (FSRU) by combining its knowledge of marine design, on-shore regasification terminals, marine civil engineering (including off shore platforms) and combined cycle power plants - a comprehensive set of skills possessed by very few companies in the world.
FSRUs are mobile plants capable of supplying a market that requires gas as its main source of energy from areas where it is not possible to install on-shore regasification terminals. They therefore allow countries that import gas to diversify their supply sources, essential for maintaining a certain level of independence in the area of energy.
This type of floating, modular unit drastically cuts down on installation time, making them a rapid response to the growing demand for gas in areas without their own regasification infrastructures or in those singular locations that do not allow an onshore solution.
SENER’s FSRUs are modular plants with a flexible structure, available in different formats to adapt to clients’ requirements:
- Off shore/island jetty: Offshore FSRU, placed some distance from the shore but with easy access from land, permanently moored to a dual berth island jetty.
- Close to shore/jetty: FSRU used in areas with sheltered waters, permanently moored to a jetty connected to the land.
- Off shore/turret moored: FSRU moored permanently to a turret and an anchor field at the bow.

The President of SENER, Jorge Sendagorta, has been awarded the Honorary Member's medal, which is granted by the Spanish Institute of Engineering (Instituto de Ingeniería de España, IIE). This institution decided to give the distinction to Jorge Sendagorta after he was nominated by the Spanish Association of Naval and Ocean Engineers, in recognition of his professional career.
